Tuscola Native Dies at Age 98

Harvey Simon Bassett, the second child born in Tuscola, died at 5:40 p.m. today in the Martin Nursing Home, Tuscola. He was 98.
He was born Sept. 25, 1859, in Tuscola, the son of Dr. Harve and Euretta Flanders Bassett. His father was the first physician to practice in Tuscola, moving there from Vermont.
Mr. Bassett had received some attention in recent years, along with Mrs. Eva E. Muir of Decatur, for being one of two living graduates of the class of 1880 at Tuscola High School.
Mr. Bassett operated a sporting goods store in West Sale Street in Tuscola for more than 60 years but had been in retirement for several years. He had been a patient in the nursing home for a year and a half.
He was married Bella Hunt of Prairieton, Ind., Feb. 27, 1887. They had two sons. One died in infancy, and the other Frank, died at 22 during the typhoid epidemic in 1916.
He leaves two nephews, Jesse and Ralph Bassett, Tuscola.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Waddington Funeral Home, Tuscola. Burial will be in the Tuscola Cemetery.
AT THE AGE OF 98
Harvey S. Bassett, one of Douglas county's oldest residents, died in Martin nursing home at 5:45 p.m. February 20 at the age of 98. He had been in failing health for some two years and a patient in the nursing home for 18 months.
Services were at 10 a.m. February 22 in Waddington funeral home with Rev. Gordon Engstrom officiating. Music was by Ted Cox.
The pallbearers were W.F. Ellis, Bruce Williams, Wendell Warren, Roy Hopkins, H.B. Bowles, and O.J. Bowles. Burial was in Tuscola cemetery.
Mr. Bassett was born September 25, 1859 and was said to be the second child born in Tuscola. His parents were Dr. H.J. and Euretta Flanders Bassett. The Bassetts were natives of Vermont. An uncle, Simon G. Bassett, came to Tuscola in 1855 to become the first postmaster and station agent. He prevailed on the brother to become Tuscola's first physician.
Mr. Bassett was married February 27, 1887 to Belle R. Hunt of Terre Haute. They had one son, Frank, who died in the typhoid epidemic in Tuscola in 1916 at the age of 22. Mrs. Bassett died in Jun 1940.
Mr. Bassett operated a Victrola and sporting goods store in Tuscola and was in business a total of 65 years. He retired in 1946.
His only survivors are two nephews, Ralph and Jesse Bassett, both of Tuscola.
