J.R. Bassett, 77, Henderson, Dies
Retired Boatbuilder and Guide Expires at Home of A Heart Ailment
Henderson, April 28. - James R. Bassett, 77, retired boatbuilder and life-long resident of the town of Henderson, died this morning at 11:20 at his residence of a heart ailment. He had been ill since last October.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Margaret Hovey Horton Bassett, and one cousin, Miss Nona Bassett.
Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2 from the Piddock funeral home, Adams. Rev. Dr. Harold H. Hiles, pastor of All Souls Universalist church, Watertown, will officiate. Burial will be in Roberts Corners cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday afternoon and evening.
Mr. Bassett was born in the town of Henderson Jan. 13, 1873, a son of Augustus and Clarissa Dye Bassett. He was a descendant of one of the old families in the town of Henderson. After attending schools in Henderson, Mr. Bassett worked for many years as a guide. He then began a boat-building business which he operated until his retirement in 1939.
Mr. Bassett was born in the Bassett homestead which had been in the family since 1822.
On Sept. 22, 1937, Mr. Bassett married Margaret Hovey Horton at Sackets Harbor.
Mr. Bassett was a member of the Henderson Bay View lodge, No. 905, F. and A.M.
