Donnie was born in Ottawa, KS on May 23, 1933, to Sherman H. and Jennie Mae (Bassett) Smith. The oldest of three children, Donnie grew up a hard working young man. He attended Chapel Hill school and high school at Appanoose, driving a school bus his senior year. He married his high school sweetheart, Juanita Myers. They had three children and were married for 16 years. He farmed outside of Homewood KS for many years. Later he worked for Purina, then sold real estate around Ottawa and Wellsville, and spent several years in construction. Donnie married Helen Hendrickson on December 31, 1980. They spent 33 fun years together until her passing on February 18, 2014. They did some traveling during retirement, as long as it didn't interfere with the gardening season. Donnie delivered fresh garden produce to those who couldn't grow their own. He was also a volunteer at Hope House in Ottawa. Donnie traveled to Wichita to help with the clean up after the tornado in Haysville. He was a good neighbor. His greatest passion was fishing and he made several trips with family and friends, and Donnie fished every lake and pond in northeast Kansas. Donnie was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter, his wife Helen, Juanita, and son-in-law, Robert Farris. He is survived by son Terry (Tracy) Smith, Tyrone, OK, and daughters Donna (Victor) Johnson, Turpin, OK, and Linda (Ron) Riley, Wichita, KS, and the other two he claimed, Julie (Dennis) Martin, Turpin, OK, and Susie Warren, Wichita, KS, his sister, Shirley Tucker of Mt. Vernon, OH, brother Walter (Sharon) Smith of Houston, TX, 8 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, March 28, 2015, at Riverlawn Christian Church, Wichita, KS. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Association , Williamsburg Library Assn., or Prairie Paws Animal Shelter in care of Baker Funeral Home, Wichita, KS.
