    • Obituary ? Bass

Mrs. Emmia Penn Bass was born July 30, 1849, and died April 2, 1901, at the age of 52 years.
By the death of both parents, she was left an orphan before the end of her fourth year, the youngest of a family of three young children. Three brothers, Edward and Albert, lived with an uncle, Robert Neeley, of Platteville, until grown. Since about the date of the war they have been in the far west.
Emma was adopted into the family of J.B. Penn and a new home life began for her, seemingly all that any home could have been. She received the love of parents, she returned the love of a daughter, giving the service of a daughter continually. The relation was a beautiful one The very ideal for a relation where a childless home receives a child, surrounds it with love, ministers to it in its helplessness, to be in turn loved, cherished, ministered to in their own hour of helplessness, and as tenderly buried as could have been done by a daughter of their own blood. There is no question in the minds of those who know how devotedly she tended her foster-parents in their last illnesses ? illnesses which resulted in their deaths, Mrs. Penn six weeks before her own, Mr. Penn three weeks, that her self-effacing, self-forgetting devotion was the cause of her own death.
On May 14th, 1874, she was married to Thomas D. Bass. Three children, Herbert, Helen and Georgia were born to them and remain to mourn the loss of a mother. Her husband?s tragic death little more than a year ago was a severe blow to Mrs. Bass, and one from which she never fully recovered.
Mrs. Bass joined the Congregational church, Oct. 3, 1869, and was a consistent member until her death.
