Death Claims Mrs. Bassett
Mrs. J.E. Bassett, 80, Whitman College graduate of 1910 and longtime educator, died Saturday in a Spokane hospital.
Her father was the Reverend John D. Jones, early day Congregational minister.
Mrs. Bassett, who had lived in Ritzville, Medical Lake, Dayton and Spokane, was a resident of Okanogan for 35 years. It will be there, in St. John's Episcopal Church, that memorial services will be conducted Thursday, following Wednesday noon graveside services at Greenwood Memorial Terrace, Spokane.
She is survived by a son, former Walla Wallan, Joseph E. Bassett, now of Roseburg, Oregon; a daughter, Miss Mary Grace Bassett, Washington, D.C., newspaperwoman; two grandchildren, Judy, a student at Whitman College, and Joseph E. III, Roseburg; a sister, Miss Grace C. Jones, Spokane; and two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Harold E. Crawford, Walla Walla, and Miss Emma Bassett, Des Moines, Washington.

Word has been received here of the Spokane death of Mrs. J.E. (Jane Olive) Bassett, a 1910 honor graduate of Whitman College, a long-time Inland Empire teacher and sister-in-law of Mrs. Harold Crawford of Walla Walla.
She was the mother of Joseph E. Bassett, Jr. of Roseburg, Oregon, formerly of Walla Walla, and Mary Grace Bassett, a well known newspaperwoman in Washington, D.C. Her son and daughter are both graduates of Whitman. A granddaughter, Judy Bassett, of Roseburg, is a student at the college.
Mrs. Bassett, 80, died in her sleep at a Spokane hospital Saturday night. Graveside services will be at noon Wednesday at Greenwood Memorial Terrace, Spokane. A memorial service will be observed Thursday evening at St. John's Episcopal Church in Okanogan, where she had resided 35 years.
Born in Pennsylvania, she came to Eastern Washington in the 1890s after her father, the Reverend John D. Jones, a Congregationalist minister, completed his divinity studies at Yale. The family lived in Ritzville, Medical Lake, Dayton and Spokane before her graduation from Whitman and her marriage in 1922.

Mary Grace Bassett, a graduate of Okanogan high school and a student at Whitman College, where she is majoring in journalism, was recently selected as one of twelve seniors at Whitman to be listed in "Who's Who of American Colleges and Universities".
Miss Bassett and her brother Joe, also a Whitman student, are spending the Christmas vacation in Okanogan with their mother, Mrs. J.E. Bassett, who is a librarian and French teacher in the high school.
