Elizabeth Ann Bassett Kark
Elizabeth Ann Bassett Kark passed peacefully at home surrounded by family after a brief illness on October 25, 2011. Born March 28, 1924 in Cresco, Iowa, the daughter of Charles F. Bassett and Florence Sheldon Bassett. Betty was a graduate of Plattsburgh Teachers College and earned her master's degree from Cornell University in 1961. She taught school in the Division Street School in Saratoga, NY, and the Lyndonville Graded School in Lyndonville, VT. She was a church organist for many years, serving many churches in Vermont and New York. Betty is survived by her husband of 64 years, William A. Kark, Sprakers, NY; daughters, Kathleen Kark of St. Johnsbury, VT; Mary Swift of Bass Harbor, ME and Joan Kark-Wren (T. Daniel Wren) of Sprakers, NY. She is survived by 12 grandchildren, David Putnam, Plattsburgh, NY, Eric Putnam, Richmond, VA, Gustave Phanstiel of Largo, FL, Sarah Simonds, Rome, ME, Susan Swift, Americus, KS, Sally Swift, Portland, ME, and Johnny Maddox, Jason Maddox, and Jeffery Maddox, all of Savannah, GA, William Wren, San Diego, CA, Christopher Wren of Utica, NY, and Michael Wren of Sprakers, NY; along with 16 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her siblings, Charles Bassett of Rochester, NY, Florence Hinckley, Greenfield, NY, and Margaret Vicari of Godfrey, IL, James Bassett of Todelo, WA, and Jean Kinyon of Lancaster, PA. She was predeceased by her daughter, Jane Maddox, and her brother, George Bassett. Memorial services will be held Saturday, October 29, 2011 at 3 p.m. in the Freysbush United Methodist Church, Freysbush, NY. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, NY.
