O.C. Merrill Bass
O.C. Merrill Bass of Gainesville passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Saturday, December 5, 2009 at the age of 88. Mr. Bass was born the eldest son of six children in Bell, Florida on January 23, 1921 to the late Harmon and Maybell Waters Bass. He served in the United States Army during World War II and later opened Bass Plumbing Company.
O.C. is preceded in death by his wives, Mabel Hamm of 13 years and Betty Edwards Bass of 43 years. He is also preceded by his sisters, Dorothy Lopez and Leona Durden and brothers, G.W. Bass and M.C. Bass. He is survived by his daughters, Patricia Nelson of Gainesville and Brenda Bass Tschorn of Keystone Heights; sons, George Bass of Chiefland, Charles Bass of Bronson, Ronnie Boyd of Gainesville, and Ricky Boyd of Ocala; brother, Willie Bass of Trenton; eighteen grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.
He will be remembered by all who knew him as a man who loved the simple things in life. He lived to love and provide for his family and to help others. He was a very generous & giving man, and truly the heart of our family. During his era, his strength & endurance were tested many times but he remained a strong man with a powerful influence for all the lives he touched, and will remain an everlasting presence. He enjoyed working hard to run his plumbing business for more than 60 years in Gainesville. He took pleasure in farming, gardening, cooking, listening to country & gospel music and being a Papa/Grandpa/Granddad to his many grandchildren. He will be forever loved and missed.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00am Thursday, December 10, 2009 at Williams-Thomas Funeral Home Westarea with Rev. Jimmy Manscill officiating. Burial will follow at Jennings Lake Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 5:30-7:00pm at Williams-Thomas Funeral Home Westarea, 823 NW 143rd
