- Henry Bassett obtained his high school education at Interlaken, Ithaca and Rochester, New York. He took a four year course in violin at Ithaca Conservatory of Music, graduating in 1918.
He volunteered in World War I and was assigned to the Navy at Newport, Rhode Island, for training as hospital apprentice. He was advanced from third class to second class Pharmacist's mate. He crossed four times to France on hospital ships, bringing home wounded soldiers, and was honorably discharged on October 11, 1919.
After the war he played violin and directed music at the Glen Springs Sanitarium in Watkins Glen, New York. At the opening of the Eastman Theater in Rochester, New York on September 1, 1922, he was selected as one of the initial players in the Eastman Theater orchestra. He resided on the Bassett homestead and was engaged in fruit growing in partnershp with his brother Thomas.

Death Takes W.A. Bassett
Interlaken - Wheeler A. Bassett, 86, retired farmer, died Thursday night (February 22, 1945), in his home in West End Avenue, after a short illness.
Mr. Bassett was born on July 24, 1858, on a farm south of the village, which has been in the Bassett family since the early part of the nineteenth century.
A lifelong resident of this community, Mr. Bassett always took an active part in civic affairs. He was a member of the Baptist Church.
Mr. and Mrs. Bassett celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary last January.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Agnes M. Thomas Bassett; three sons, Wilmer Bassett, Monticello, Florida; Henry Bassett, Watkins Glen and Corporal Thomas Bassett with the U.S. Army in England; two daughters, Mrs. Earl Wilson, Interlaken, and Mrs. Seward Brooks, Hayts Corners; 19 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Four of his grandsons are with the armed forces overseas.
Funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. today in the home by the Reverend George A. Cole Jr., pastor of the Baptist Church, with burial in Lakeview Cemetery.
