Lois Bassett Waldrop (Picture included)
Asheville - Lois Bassett Waldrop entered the Kingdom of Heaven on Sunday April 21, 2013. She was born December 20, 1925, and reared on Spooks Branch Rd. in the Beaverdam area of North Asheville. She was graduated from Grace High School in 1942 and then attended Berea College in KY. She graduated from Berea with a Bachelor's degree in Math in 1946. After graduation she returned to Asheville and taught math at Asheville-Biltmore College. Later she became a data analyst with the National Weather Service where she met her future husband, Tom Waldrop. The couple was married in September 1952. They moved to Alaska in 1954 and back to Asheville in 1956. Her husband's career moved them to the Charleston SC area in 1962. There, she became a well-respected math teacher at Hanahan High School. The couple moved back to the Asheville area in 1987. Lois was devoted to her 3 children, 5 grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren. After retirement, she was also devoted to her many friends from childhood. She loved the Blue Ridge Mountains and always wanted to be within sight of a mountain. Lois was a long-time member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church in North Charleston, SC where she was very active with the United Methodist Women. In Asheville, Lois was an active member of Asbury Memorial United Methodist where she served as Treasurer and chair of the Cemetery oversight committee. Lois Waldrop was predeceased by her father, Thomas Justis Bassett, her mother, Ora Lee Burleson Bassett, her brother, Raymond Brownlow Bassett, and her husband, Thomas Joseph Waldrop. She is survived by her daughter, Lynn Waldrop Cox and husband Paul J. Cox; son Thomas Allan Waldrop and wife Virginia C. Waldrop; and son Robert Joseph Waldrop and wife Julia M Waldrop. Her beloved grandchildren are Jenni Cox Hendrix, Tracie Waldrop Satcher, Michael Thomas Waldrop, Kimberly Waldrop Kimball, and Richard Edwin Waldrop. The family will receive friends on Wednesday April 24, 2013 from 6 to 8 PM at Morris Funeral Home, 304 Merrimon Ave. Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM, Thursday, April 25, 2013 at Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church with Rev. J. Curtis Goforth officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
