Greeley, Colorado - Verna Alene Walters, 88, of Greeley, Colorado, passed on Easter Sunday, April 8, 2012. She was born May 25, 1923, to Ethel and James Bassett in Milliken, Colorado. She loved life and all those who shared it with her. She married her husband, Vernon, in 1943 in Greeley, Colorado. Her husband's military career meant many moves for the family, and Verna always managed to involve herself with volunteer activities and Protestant Women of the Chapel groups both overseas and in the United States. In 1970, she moved to Oklahoma City with her husband and became active in the Northwest Newcomer Alumni, where she was a past president. She was also active with the Presbyterian Hospital Auxiliary and in the activities of their church. She and Vernon celebrated their sixty-third wedding anniversary on September 20, 2006. She was preceded in death by her parents and later her loving husband, Vernon, who passed on Veterans Day, 2006. Also preceding her were her brothers, JD and Paul Bassett; and sister, Pauline Milton. She is survived by her sons: Bill (Loretta) Walters, Turlock, California; and David (Linda) Walters, Stanton, California. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews, whom she dearly loved. A Memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m., May 4, 2012, at Fort Logan National Cemetery, Denver, Colorado. Memorial contributions may be made to the Calvin Presbyterian Church, 2001 North Meridian Avenue, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma 73107.
