Harry Bass Dies; Oilman, Benefactor
Harry W. Bass, of 3525 Turtle Creek Blvd., veteran Dallas oilman and philanthropist, chairman of the board of Goliad Oil & Gas Co. in Canada, and H.W. Bass & Sons, Inc., in Dallas, died here Wednesday.
Born in Enid, Okla., he had lived in Dallas since 1932.
Bass had been involved in the oil and gas business in )Oklahoma and Texas as a drilling contractor, oil and gas producer, pipeline operator, cycling plant owner and marketer of gasoline and liquefied petroleum gas products since 1919.
He was a pioneer in the recycling of natural gas and built and installed gas plants and gathering systems. In conjunction with the Lee C. Moore Manufacturing Co., he initiated the development of the portable drilling mast.
Bass attended the University of Missouri and University of Oklahoma. He was an army veteran of World War I, having served as a battery commander in the 82nd Field Artillery.
He was past president of the Texas Mid-Continent Oil & Gas Association and past director of the American Petroleum Institute, the Independent Petroleum Association of America, First National Bank in Dallas, Canadian Oil & Gas Association, Graduate Research Center of the Southwest and the Dallas Chamber of Commerce.
Bass established scholarships at the University of Oklahoma and the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alta., Canada. He assisted financially in building a home for student nurses at Baylor Medical Center a wing of the Bass Memorial Baptist Hospital in Enid.
He added charitable, scientific, literary, religious and educational institutions through the Bass Foundation, a trust established in 1945.
In 1968, Bass was presented with a special commemorative award by the Oklahoma Hospital Association for his contributions to the health car field.
Bass was a member of the Highland Park Methodist Church, the Dallas Petroleum Club, Brook Hollow Golf Club, Dallas Country Club and Beta Theta Pi fraternity.
Survivors: Wife; two sons, Harry W. Bass Jr. and Richard D. Bass of Dallas; two brothers, H.B. Bass and D.C. Bass of Enid; three sisters, Mrs. albert Nelson, Mrs. Earl Fambrough and Mrs. Dale Mount of Dallas, and nine grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the Highland Park Methodist Church. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
