Herman R. Baass
VICTORIA-Herman R. Baass, 98, of Victoria, passed away Tuesday evening, Dec. 26, 2006 in Victoria. He was born in Lavaca County on March 29, 1908 to the late John F. and Frances Hanak Baass. He was owner of Baass Concrete Co., a rancher and a 50 year member of the Knights of Columbus.
Herman Baass was an innovator and had a creative mind. The Baass Concrete Company was founded in 1926 and ran until 1989. Through the years Baass Concrete built hundreds of bridges from Beaumont to Brownsville. Herman enjoyed hunting and playing the harmonica for friends and family. Herman served the Victoria community in many ways. He was elected to the Victoria School Board of Trustees, served on the Board of Directors of American Bank of Commerce for 18 years, and the county school bus board for 5 years. He was a 3rd degree Knight of the Knights of Columbus Council #1329, and a 4th degree Knight of the Knights of Columbus Assembly #1126. Herman was also associated with Nazareth Academy, St. Joseph High School, Kiwanis Club, and Texas Precast Concrete Association.
Herman is survived by daughter, Gail Srubar, of Victoria; son, Allen Baass, of Victoria; grandchildren, Melissa (Tim) Meade, Stacy (Herb) Scranton, Brad (Tara) Baass, and Regina (Harold) Schwab; great-grandchildren, Lane and Lillie Meade, Axis, Xena, and Phoenix Baass. He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lillie C. Marbach Baass; sisters, Mary, Josephine, Evelyn, Frances and Louise Baass, who later became Sister Francis; brothers, Otto, John, Emil and Edward Baass.
Funeral Services will be 2 p.m. Dec. 29, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, the Rev. Cele-stino Say officiating. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery. Pallbearers are Brad Baass, Tim Meade, Herb Scra-nton, Jim Alvarez, Charlie Fau-pel, Joseph Ladewig, Steve Motal, and Kenneth Marbach. Honorary Pallbearers are Kenneth Price, Robert Alvarez, and David Boyd.
Memorials may be made to Our Lady of Lourdes Alter Society or Hospice of Victoria.
