A. Milton Bass
A. Milton Bass died Dec. 10, 1998, in a Chesapeake hospital.
Mr. Bass was a native of New York City and a resident of Hampton Roads for most of his life. He was preceded in death by his beloved first wife, Helen Feldman Bass, and their son Philip Stephen Bass, who was truly his ray of sunshine.
Mr. Bass was the owner of the Top Hat Restaurant in Virginia Beach during the 50s; the Ranch House Restaurant and the Galaxy Disco, both in Newport News, from 1962 to 1978; and LeRoys International Restaurant in Newport News from 1978 to 1982. After his retirement from the restaurant business, he became a jewelry coordinator for the Revlon Group. He retired from Revlon and assisted his son at Oh! Brian's Restaurant in Norfolk until its sale in 1998.
He was a member of Brith Sholom Center and was a mason with the Chamblee, Georgia Masonic Lodge. He attended Ohio State University and was a Army veteran of World War II, where he was a bomb disposal expert and anatomy instructor with its nursing department. He was a former member of the Peninsula Restaurant Association and was its former president and ''Restaurant Man of the Year'' for numerous years. He played an active role in the legislation that brought liquor by the drink into Virginia restaurants.
Survivors include his cherished wife, Naomi Legum Bass, his true life partner and best friend; two daughters, Joan Bass Baydush and her husband, Jerry, of Norfolk, Robin Feldman Kyle and her husband, Rickie, of Chesapeake; two sons, Dr. Howard Ronald Feldman of Chesapeake, Brian Stuart Feldman and his wife, Terri, of Virginia Beach; and six grandchildren, Helen Baydush Kehayas, Alan Howard Baydush and his wife, Lori, Lexie Paige Feldman, Philip Mason Kyle, Lance Eric Kyle and Philip Michael Feldman; and a great-grandson, Alex Stephen Kehayas and a nephew Joseph Bass, who was like a son to him.
Realizing his impending death, he asked his family not to cry for him. Celebrate, have a party, because he had a wonderful life.
A graveside service will be conducted at noon Friday at B'Nai Israel Cemetery by Rabbi Israel Bornstein and Rabbi Lawrence A. Forman. The family will be at the home of Jerry and Joan Baydush, 7018 Hunters Court, Norfolk, following the funeral services. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of the donor's choice. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk, will be handling the arrangements.
