Aubrey Sidney Bass Jr.
Aubrey Sidney Bass Jr., 78, died April 29, 2002.
Born and raised in South Richmond ''Dogtown'', Aubrey graduated from Fork Union Military Academy. He attended Virginia Polytechnic University for two years where he joined the U.S. Navy during World War II. He then entered the V-12 unit and was transferred to the University of Virginia where he completed a civil engineering degree. Upon graduation in 1944, Aubrey was commissioned as an Ensign and served in the Navy Seabees, 105th Construction Battalion, stationed in the Philippines on Saipan and later served in occupation forces of Japan.
Aubrey retired as chairman of Bass Construction Co., the family business he owned and operated with his brother, Robert Bruce Bass (originally founded by his father and uncles in the city of Manchester in 1912 as E.L. Bass and Bros.). He and his brother also owned Bass Crane Service and jointly owned Bass Steel Buildings with T.B. Washington. He was a charter member and past president of South Richmond Rotary.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mary Joyner (Ashie) Bass; three children, A. Sidney Bass III, Edward J. Bass and Mary Elizabeth Bass Pedersen; brother, Robert Bruce Bass; five grandchildren, Neal and Anne Paige Bass, Lauren and Morgan Bass and Drew Pedersen, all of Richmond; and other devoted family members and friends.
His remains rest at Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today and 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in River Road Church, Baptist. Interment will follow in Westhampton Memorial Park.
