Avarilla B. Short Bass

Avarilla B Short Bass, 94, of Indianapolis, passed away peacefully at home March 16, 2023. She was born March 27, 1928 in Greenwood, Indiana to the late Charles Leland and Lestie America Slack Short. Avarilla lived most of her life in Irvington. She attended Arsenal Technical High School, and her first employment was with H.P. Wasson. Avarilla then worked with her mother and sister for many years for Ramsey Interiors and L.S. Ayres & Co. as a talented seamstress.
Avarilla was a babysitter for many years for Amy Rothrock who cherished her as ?Grandma Relia.? After retirement she worked for over 20 years for McDonalds where she was affectionately known as ?Miss Rilly.? Avarilla was honored on her 86th birthday with a party, a proclamation from the City of Indianapolis, and a visit from the Mayor. She enjoyed traveling with her family and cheering on the Indianapolis Colts.
Visitation will be Sunday, March 26, 2023 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Shirley Brothers Irving Hill Chapel, 5377 E. Washington St. A Celebration of Life service will be held on what would be her 95th birthday at 1:00 p.m. Monday.
Avarilla is survived by her daughters, Charlene Carswell and Carolene Bash (David); granddaughter, Carrie Dillman (Ryan); great-granddaughter, Cora Dillman; and her seven precious kitties. She was preceded in death by her sister, Fern Carroll Graham.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor?s choice. The family would like to thank the many caregivers, friends and neighbors who cared for Avarilla, and a special thanks to Tom and Judy Rothrock. Judy was able to help immensely in Avarilla?s final days and the family will be forever grateful.
