    • Gilbert was president of Miehle, Goss, Dexter, a printing manufacturing
      firm. It was bought and became a division of Rockwell International sometime
      in the 1980's. He then became CEO of GATF, the Graphic Arts Technical
      Foundation, in Pittsburgh where he stayed until retiring.

      Gilbert Bassett is Professor of Economics at the University of Illinois at
      Chicago, where he specializes in Econometrics. Dr. Bassett has made
      fundamental theoretical contributions in the areas of regression quantities
      and robust estimation which could occur as rate issues, and he is in addition
      an outstanding applied econometrician. He has also performed extensive
      research in assessing the potential economic impacts of storing high leven
      nuclear waste material. Dr. Bassett holds a Ph.D. degree from the University
      of Michigan.

      Gilbert W. Bassett

      Gilbert W. Bassett, 68, former executive director of the Graphic Arts
      Technical Foundation in Pittsburgh, died of a heart attack Saturday in
      Holland, Mich.

      Mr. Bassett, of Oakland, retired in 1988 after 14 years as head of the
      foundation, which is an international printing research and educational
      institute with 3,000 members. Before joining the foundation, he was president
      of MGD Graphic Systems in Chicago, a division of Rockwell Internationa

      Mr. Bassett was a former board member of the National Printing Equipment and
      Supply Association, which he also served as vice president.

      He graduated from the former Carnegie Institute of Technology with a degree in
      printing management and received a master's degree in business administration
      from the University of Chicago.

      Surviving are his wife, Jean; four sons, Gilbert W. Jr. of Clarendon Hills,
      Ill., John of St. Louis, Robert of Western Springs, Ill, and Thomas of Coral
      Springs, Fla.; and two sisters, Nancy and Barbara.

      Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at McCabe Brothers Inc.
      Funeral Home, 6214 Walnut St., Shadyside. Burial will be private.
