Bassett, age 69, died Wednesday, April 6, 2011, surrounded by his family at his home in Brockton after battling a short illness. He was the beloved husband of Diane (Demers) Bassett for 47 years. Born Thursday, Aug. 7, 1941, in Cleveland, Ohio, he was the son of the late Dr. Gardner G. and Helen L. (Goddard) Bassett. Michael graduated from Holliston Junior College with an associate's degree in Respiratory Therapy and became a registered respiratory therapist. He was employed by Brockton Hospital for 44 years with 35 of those years as a respiratory therapist, retiring in 2004. He was also employed as a therapist by Massachusetts Respiratory Hospital in Braintree for nine years, and most recently by Clinical1Home Medical in Weymouth for 10 years, retiring in 2010. He was a member of the American Association for Respiratory Care for 38 years. He enjoyed reading, working in his yard, taking cruises, vacationing on Cape Cod, and spending time with his family and friends. He was the loving father of Laurie Audette and her husband David of Tiverton, R.I., and Lynn Filosi of Whitman; and the loving grandfather of Noelle Audette of Tiverton, R.I. He is also survived by his sister, Helen Pacewicz of Bridgewater; and by his brother, Dr. Gardner Bassett and his wife Linda of Raynham. He was also the father of the late Michael G. Bassett Jr., the grandfather of the late Sarah Audette and the father-in-law of the late David Filosi. His funeral service will beheld Tuesday, April 12, 2011, at 11 a.m. in the Dahlborg-MacNevin Funeral Home, 647 Main St., Brockton. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation will take place Monday, April 11, from 4 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Michael's memory may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 220 North Main St., Suite 104, Natick, MA 01760, and to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.
