George S. Bass
George S. Bass of Chestnut Hill, MA, born Paris, August 26, 1931, died from complications of Covid on November 5, 2023.
A graduate of Yale's Class of 1953, he served with the Army's Far Eastern Command, and then obtained a degree from the Wharton School of Finance. He worked initially in the marketing department of Cabot Corporation but went on to found Colombia's first commercial egg farm, Huevos Oro, in Bogota in 1965. When he sold the farm in 1977, it was the largest egg producer in South America.
After returning to the US, George became a pioneer in the organic egg field with the founding of The Country Hen in Hubbardston, Mass. It was the first producer of branded organic eggs in the US. The inserts he wrote for the farm's distinctive 6-egg boxes featured vignettes of farm life, nutritional advice, and personnel profiles, and earned The Country Hen a place in Massachusetts' folk culture.
After the sale of The Country Hen George wrote a book about his late daughter Katie's depressive illness, which had led to her death in 2002.
George stayed in touch with a large circle of friends, in person and through letters, calls, emails, handwritten notecards, and membership in Church of the Redeemer, of Chestnut Hill, MA. He played regularly in men's tennis groups at The Country Club, Longwood Cricket Club, and The Northeast Harbor Tennis Club.
George is survived by his sister, Medora Bass, of Pagosa Springs, CO; his son, Steedman L. Bass, of Cambridge, MA; his daughter, Margot S. Bass, and son-in-law, Gorky Villa, of Takoma Park, MD; three grandchildren, Alejandro, Natasha, and Arthur Villa Bass; and his former wife, Jane Liddell Bass, of Vero Beach, FL.
The family wish to express appreciation to George's long-time personal assistants, Betty Wong and Jeannie Bunger, and thanks to the physicians and staff of Newton-Wellesley Hospital for the kindness shown to them, and the loving care afforded George in his final illness.
A memorial service will be held at Church of the Redeemer, Chestnut Hill, MA, on Saturday, June 15, 2024, at 11AM.
