Services for Lois Mae Bassett Carpenter were held at 2 p.m. February 9, 1987 in the Gulf Coast Bible Church in Sweeny with Pastor Emil Schmidt officiating. Burial was in Sweeny Cemetery.
Lois Mae Bassett was born in San Antonio on June 26, 1924. She was the daughter of Julian and Cora Bell (Drake) Bassett.
Most of her childhood was spent in Gila, New Mexico and in Dryden and Sanderson, Texas. She finished high school in Sanderson and attended business college in San Antonio and was employed in secretarial work there for a number of years.
While living in Abilene, Texas, she began teaching children the Bible. She taught in a number of churches of many denominations and after living in Sweeny a number of years, she was one of several people wishing to have a Bible Church there. Her last project was to prepare a starting curriculum for Children's Wednesday Night Bible Class.
Lois Mae Bassett Carpenter lived in Crosbyton from 1982 until 1984. She owned and operated the famous Smith House here during that time.
She is survived by her son, Richard Wiggins of Sweeny; one sister, Betty Newton of Longview; one brother, Roger Bassett of Shreveport, Louisiana; and two grandsons, Steven and Philip. Pallbearers were Donald Smith, Sterling Laird, Richard Howard, Thieme Crist, Donald Schmidt and J.D. Minze.
