Agnes Wheater
Funeral services for Agnes Wheater, 91, formerly of 610 Canton St., were held Saturday afternoon at 1 at the Fox Funeral Home in Ogdensburg. Rev. Stuart Wattles officiating. Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery, Heuvelton.
Mrs. Wheater is survived by one nephew, Harrison B. Wood Jr. of Connecticut; and one cousin, Mrs. Keith (Margaret) Wood of Delmar, N.Y.
She was born in Ogdensburg on Oct. 26, 1889, the daughter of Harvey and Alice (Bassett) Wood. She graduated from Ogdensburg Free Academy and attended the Ogdensburg teachers’ training class. Mrs. Wheater later attended Cortland Mornal School and Potsdam State Teachers College. She graduated with a B.S. degree from Potsdam Teachers College. Prior to her marriage, Mrs. Wheater taught in Beacon, N.Y. She later was principal of the Lincoln School in Ogdensburg.
On Jan. 1, 1925, she married Stuart F. Wheater at the Methodist Parsonage in Ogdensburg. Following their marriage, the couple moved to Helmuth, N.Y., where Mr. Wheater was the senion business officer of Gowanda State Hospital. Mr. Wheater died Dec. 25, 1945.
After her husband’s death, Mrs. Wheater returned to Ogdensburg where she taught for three years. She later taught the sixth grade in the Ogdensburg school system from 1948 to 1960. Mrs. Wheater was a member of the United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Ogdensburg Retired Teachers Association and the Swe-Kat-Si chapter of the DAR. Mrs. Wheater was an honorary member of the Alpha Study Club.
