Roberta Carpenter Obituary Mrs. Roberta Carpenter Dies in Phoebus
Mrs. Roberta Bassette Carpenter, 48 years old, died yesterday afternoon at 4:20 o’clock in her home, 19 Poplar Avenue, Phoebus. She had been ill for the past several weeks. Mrs. Carpenter was Miss Roberta Bassette, of York county, prior to her marriage. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Fannie Steenberg, of Phoebus. Funeral services, conducted by the Reverend Charles Arthur Vandermeulen, pastor of the Phoebus Baptist church, will be held from the Poplar avenue residence at 11 o’clock Friday morning. Burial will be made in Oakland cemetery.
Funeral of Mrs. Roberta Carpenter
The funeral of the late Mrs. Roberta Carpenter, widow of Louis J. Carpenter, was held at her residence, 19 Poplar Avenue, Phoebus, yesterday at 11 a.m. The Reverend Charles Arthur Vandermulen, pastor of the Phoebus Baptist church, officiated. Mrs. Harvey A. Foster, assistant choir leader of the Phoebus Baptist church, assisted the officiating clergyman in the rendering of three suitable duets, “The Solid Rock”, “Hiding in Thee” and “He Hideth My Soul.” The first two of these sung at the residence were the favorites of the deceased, and the third was sung beside the new grave in Oakland cemetery, the place of interment. Near relatives surviving the deceased include a daughter and a son, Mrs. Fannie Steenburg and Frank J. Stowell, with whom the deceased had made her home in Phoebus, and five stepchildren, Mrs. P.B. Topping and Tilton S. and George Carpenter of Hampton, and Thomas and William Carpenter, of Newport News. Death came Wednesday at 4:20 p.m. after a three-months illness, and was due to heart trouble. Previous to her marriage, the deceased was Miss Roberta Bassette, of York county. She was a member of the Hampton Church of Christ. Funeral visitors from a distance included Mr. and Mrs. L.W. Stowell and children, of New York city, and Mr. and Mrs. F.W. Hardwave and son, David, and daughter, Helen of Panama.
