Newell F. Bassett
Newell F. Bassett, was born in the town of Saranac in the year of 1856. He was the eldest son of Alex and Rosella Bassett and died July 27, 1923 being nearly 68 years of age.
He had followed the carpenters trade from early life, and his death was caused by a fall received while at work in the Argo Theatre of Lake Placid, where he had been employed for some time. He lived but a few hours after the fall.
He was married to Cora Spaulding of Saranac, who survives him. To this union were born Wallace Bassett of Saranac, N.Y., Mrs. Gertrude Stowell of Providence, R.I., Mrs. Grace Dassance of Saranac, N.Y., Merritt Bassett of Saranac, N.Y., Wm. Bassett of Amsterdam, N.Y., Miss Nellie Bassett of Plattsburgh, N.Y. The above children are surviving two others died young.
The funeral was largely attended from his home. The services being conducted by the Rev. G.D. McChesney of Keeseville, N.Y., who was a friend of the family.
Mr. Bassett was a devoted member of Saranac Valley Lodge No. 778 I.O.O.F. of Saranac. He was one of the older members and will be greatly missed.
The I.O.O.F. service was conducted at the grave by W.S. White and D.A. Parsons assisted by Rev. G.D. McCheaney.
Mr. Bassett had also been one of the Board of Trustees of Saranac Union Free School, for a number of years and proved his interest in the good of the community.
He also has represented the town as Collector and Constable, with much credit to himself.
Mr. Bassett had many friends who will remember him in a most kindly way and all extend sympathy to the family in their affliction.

Funeral of Newell Bassett Largely Attended
The funeral of Newell F. Bassett who was killed at Lake Placid last week, was held at Saranac, Monday. Among those from out of town who attended were Mrs. Etta G. Caton of Worcester, Mass., Mrs. Chas. O. Stowell of Providence, R.I., William Bassett of Amsterdam, N.Y., Nellie L. Bassett of Plattsburgh, Mrs. L.G. Dassance of Saranac Lake, Mr. and Mrs. S. J. Bassett of Lyon Mountain, J.B. Spaulding and Mrs. Judson Spaulding of Peru, Mr. and Mrs. Clark Bradley and son Raymond, and Miss Mary Bassett.
