Roseburg House Fire Kills Two Young Women
Roseburg (AP) - Two University of Oregon students died Sunday in a fire at a Roseburg home where they were visiting.
Authorities identified the victims as Christine Burns, 24, Portland, and Judy Bassett, 24, Albany. The two were staying with Betty Bassett, Judy's mother.
Miss Burns was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert M. Burns, 2872 NW Cumberland Road.
Fire officials said the two younger women were sleeping upstairs when the blaze broke out. Mrs. Bassett escaped, then returned in an effort to rescue the victims but was driven back by extreme heat and smoke.
Mrs. Bassett was hospitalized suffering from shock as well as burns on her hands and face.
The Roseburg Fire Department is investigating the cause of the blaze.

Cause Studied In Fatal Blaze
Roseburg - Fire officials believe a fire that killed two young women Sunday in a Roseburg home started in the kitchen.
Fire Chief Richard Fowler said Monday authorities are investigating the fire that killed Christine Burns, 24, Portland, a University of Oregon student, and Judy Bassett, 24, Albany, a teacher. The two were staying with Betty Bassett, Judy's mother.
Miss Burns was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Burns, 2872 NW Cumberland Road.
Fowler said the victim's bodies were found in a rear, downstairs bedroom. The fire badly damaged the downstairs and burned the upstairs, also.
Mrs. Bassett escaped, but later attempted to rescue the victims. She suffered burns on her hands and face and was hospitalized for treatment of the burns and shock.

Private cremation rites were held. Memorial service Saturday, November 9, 2 p.m. at Roseburg First Presbyterian Church. Rev. Dean Kokier officiating.
