Mrs. A.J. Bass
Minola McLaughlin, daughter of Hiram and Mary McLaughlin, was born in Clarke county, Iowa, Jan. 5, 1871, and passed away at her home near Derby April 7, 1961, at the age of 90 years, three months and two days.
On Jan. 5, 1888, she was united in marriage to Albert J. Bass. Seven children blessed their home: Jessie, Earl, Fred, Maude, Floyd, Hazel and Glen. Most of her life was spent on farms near Derby. The past 40 years had been lived at the present home.
Early in life she was converted at the United Brethren church in Clarke county. Later she transferred her membership to the Derby Presbyterian church. She was an active member as long as her health permitted.
She was preceded in death by her husband after 66 years of marriage, one son and one daughter, her parents, three brothers and four sisters.
Surviving her are five children: Mrs. Robert Alexander, Mrs. R. O. Clark, Earl, Floyd and Glen; 12 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, one sister, Mrs. Henry Baker of Osceola, many other relatives and friends.
Mrs. Bass was a devoted wife and mother, rearing her family in a Christian environment, giving wise council and advice. Besides her own family, she reared two grandsons, and had a great interest in the care of her other grandchildren. She bore her invalid years with patience and fortitude and was lovingly cared for in the home by her sons, Floyd and Glen.
She was a kind, thoughtful neighbor and friend, sharing their sorrows as well as their joys. Although old in years, she remained young at heart. Her family and friends enjoyed her narratives of the past and her Irish humor. Her life speaks for itself - long and full - a wonderful Christian gone to her reward.
Funeral services were held April 10, at the Hutchinson Funeral Home in Humeston, with the Rev. P. H. Blunt officiating, assisted by the Rev. James Kirtley. Interment was made in the Goshen cemetery.
