July 14, 1952 - September 15, 2026
WELLSVILLE ? Carroll L. ?Leroy? Bassett, 74, passed away on Tuesday (September 15, 2026) at home surrounded by family.
Carroll was born on July 14, 1952 in North Hornell to Carol O. and Essie P. (Zeh) Bassett. He was a 1970 graduate of Greenwood Central School and attended Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa. He served in the United States Army from 1978 ? 1989. On December 18, 1988 in Greenwood, he married Rebecca Mae ?Becky? Jennings, who predeceased him on June 25, 2017.
Leroy worked in the shipping and receiving department at Alfred University for 14 years, retiring in 2022. In his retirement years he worked for Gray Manufacturing Industries in Hornell.
Leroy is survived by a daughter, Samantha Bassett of Greenwood; a son, Dallas (Sydney Weakland) Bassett of Wellsville; five step-daughters, Heidi (Kevin) Margeson of Hartsville, Melanie (Kenneth) Ruppert of Ulysses, PA, Stacey Ellis of Mims, FL, Michelle Sandford of Albuquerque, NM and Kathy (David) Brown of Rochester; three sisters, Lorraine Warriner of Greenwood, Linda (Pat) McCaffrey of Avon and Carolyn (Terry) Smith of Rexville; 17 grandchildren, Andrew Whritenour, Kevin Bryant, Steven Bryant, Ashley Gibson, Amanda Margeson, Brian Smith, Nichole Smith, David Mead, Jessica Bell, Jonathan Wentworth, Stephanie Ellis, Marcus Sanford, Amber Sanford, Dylan Wentworth, Haley Kellogg, Faith Bown and Ethan Brown; 19 great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his wife of 28 years, he was predeceased by a daughter, Tabatha Bryant, a granddaughter, Brittany Wentworth, a sister, Becky Bassett and a brother-in-law, Richard Warriner.
Leroy enjoyed the simple things of life. He learned early on the value of hard work growing up on his father?s dairy farm. He developed the discipline it takes to be successful in life by competing on Greenwood Central School?s track team. He felt he could run for days.
Leroy?s favorite memories were centered on family. While living in the South he looked forward to the trips to his parent?s dairy farm in New York so his children could visit Grandpa and Grandma. Their homemade cookies were enough to die for. He looked at BINGO and golfing as a fun way to spend time with his children and grandchildren. A recent highlight with his son Dallas was attending the NASCAR race at Richmond Raceway in Virginia. Leroy was an avid Buffalo Bills fan. Upon hearing the Bills won this past Sunday, his last response was ?yoo hoo? before drifting off for the final time.
To spend time with his wife Becky, they would travel to visit family in Ohio and Florida. They also enjoyed fishing and visiting the casinos together.
Per his wishes, there will be no prior visitation. Full military honors will be rendered on Saturday (October 3) at 1:00 p.m. at Baker-Swan Funeral Home in Wellsville/Scio. Online condolences may be offered at www.baker-swan.com.
