Biographical History of Grant County, Indiana
Eli Moore
Eli Moore was born August 22, 1847, on the farm in Wabash county, Ind., which has ever since been his home. His parents were Thomas and Mildred (Scott) Moore, deceased, former prominent residents of Liberty township, which was the scene of their activity for many years. Thomas Moore was born in North Carolina in 1800 and followed husbandry in his native state until a young man, when he came to Rush county, Ind., where he was married. In 1835 he came by ox team to Wabash county and there entered eighty acres of wild land from the government. This land is now the home of Eli Moore and the old parchment deed which is in possession of Mr. and Mrs. Moore bears date of march 20, 1837. it was customary for neighbors for miles around to help in house and barn-raising, and it was no uncommon thing for the deer to browse on the tender twigs after the trees were felled. Wolves were a menace to the farmer, causing no end of trouble, and it was a wise man who provided a pent to shelter his sheep, those not protected in this manner being carried off in large numbers by these greedy and troublesome pests. He was a man of lofty ideals and endeavored to live up to those ideals even in the most ordinary affairs of life. He was a Whig until the advent of the Republican party, when he joined forces with that body. A devout Baptist, he attended services for years at Antioch in the house of worchhip0 which his own contributions have aided in building, and from which he was buried September 15, 1861. His wife was born in 1811, in the state of Tennessee, and passed away in 1884. She was a member of the Christian church and instilled in the hears of her children the precepts of right living. She was the mother of there sons and six daughters, five of whom her. They are as follows: Nancy A., wife of Uriah Bunsworth, a mechanic of Huntington, this state; Melissa, wife of John Pearson, a farmer of Grant county; Levi, who is retired and lives in Marion; Sarah, wife of William Coomler, who resided in Jonesboro, where he is interested in life insurance and also serves as assessor of Grant county; and Eli.
Eli Moore was reared and educated in Wabash county, attending the common schools and there learning the rudiments of the English language. He did not have far to go to reach the school, as the building stood on his father?s farm. At the age of thirteen death deprived him of a wise counsellor and loving father, a loss that was in part retrieved by the care and judgment of a devoted mother, with whom he lived as long as her life was spared and to whose wants it was his blessed privilege to minister. He has continued to reside on the old homestead, buying out the interest of the other heirs and has added many excellent improvements; the commodious house and barns are of his building, as are most of the improvements seen on the place. Twelve hundred rods of tile have placed it on a par with the best land in the township and he is prosperous because progressive in his methods.
May 30, 1869, he was joined in marriage with Miss Elizabeth Houser, a daughter of Samuel and Catherine (Keith) Houser, and was born in Wabash county, September 17, 1849. She was one of thirteen children, five of whom are living at this time. Three of the brothers live in Topeka, Kan., where they are engaged in the mercantile business, and Nancy is the wife of George Rinker and lives in Marion. Mrs. Moore was little more than a baby when her father died, being but nine years old, and five years later the mother was also taken. Six children have been born to bless this worthy couple and five of them are living to reflect credit upon the parents who have reared them to honorable lives. Jennie is the wife of Abraham L. Garrison, of Liberty township, and the mother of two bright boys, Floyd and Cecil; Melissa married Edward Renniker, a farmer of Liberty township, and his one child, Beulah; William E. resided at home and is one of the successful and efficient teacher of this township; Charles L. has been recently graduated from the Lafontaine high school; and Riley E. from the common schools. Mr. Moore has supported the Republican ticket since casting his first vote. He and his wife are members and active works in the Boundary Line Christian church and are citizens whose example exerts a beneficent influence on the lives of those about them.
