Stephen Maurice Bass: Toledo man dies in fall from cliff
Linn County sheriff's deputies continue to investigate the Sunday death of a Toledo man who fell from a cliff near near Gordon Meadows, east of Cascadia, while on a camping trip.
The victim was identified as 61-year-old Stephen Maurice Bass.
Linn County Undersheriff Jim Yon provided this account:
At 3:55 p.m. Sunday, the Linn County 911 dispatch center received a call from Martha Linda Leech, 55. Leech told dispatchers that her male companion on the camping trip, Bass, had fallen to the bottom of a cliff.
When deputies and Search and Rescue personnel arrived on the scene, they saw Bass' body, about 100 feet below a log landing at the base of a cliff.
A Search and Rescue member traversed the steep slope to reach the body and to confirm that Bass was dead.
Due to approaching darkness and the rugged terrain, the scene was secured overnight. The body was recovered by Corvallis Mountain Rescue and Linn County Search and Rescue personnel on Monday.
The body was taken to Sweet Home Funeral Chapel.
