Bertha Bass, 93, retired teacher, businesswoman
Bertha R. Bass, 93, a retired teacher and businesswoman, died Thursday at Royal Plaza Care Center at Lewiston of causes related to age.
The daughter of Martin and Mary Beringer Schuster, she was born Aug. 16, 1903, at Pomeroy. She attended Holy Rosary Catholic Grade School at Pomeroy and Pomeroy High School, graduating in 1921.
She attended Holy Names Academy at Spokane from 1922 to 1925, receiving her lifetime teaching certificate for the state of Washington. She later continued her education at Lewiston Normal School, the State Normal School at Cheney, Wash., and University of Idaho at Moscow.
She taught school at Columbia County, Wash., from 1925 to 1929.
After her mother died in 1929, she moved to Pomeroy to teach fifth grade for four years and help keep house for her father and siblings on the family farm. After her father died, she owned and operated the farm along with her siblings and, eventually, her nephews. The family still owns the farm.
She and Harry Macey were married in June 1934 at Benton City, Wash. He died in February 1935.
She and Wilbur E. Bass married Aug. 3, 1936, at Wallace, Idaho. She taught in Wallace and he managed the Samuels Hotel.
In 1939 they moved to Rosalia, where they operated Bass? Fountain Café until 19843, when he entered the military.
While he was in service, she taught school at Wapato, Wash. During the summers, she returned to Rosalia and worked as a telephone operator.
They reopened Bass? in 1945, operating it until 1954.
Then they moved to Soap Lake, Wash., where they operated the Hudson Apartment Hotel on the lake?s shore. They also operated Bass? Mens Wear at Quincy, Wash., near Soap Lake, until they sold the store in 1977 because of his poor health. He died June 21, 1978.
She continued to operate the hotel until October 1994. She retired to Clarkston in 1994 and moved to the care center in November.
Survivors include a nephew, K. David Hagen of Clarkston.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Thomas, Fred and George Schuster, and two sisters, Chaterine Landkammer and Mabel Hagen.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Valley View Memorial Park at Soap Lake. The Rev. Richard Mel House of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church at Ephrata, Wash., will officiate.
Vassar-Rawis Funeral Home at Lewiston is handling arrangements.
