Earl R. Bassett
Earl R. Bassett, age 67, 1021 Madison avenue, insurance representative and former superintendent of the City Heating Plant, died yesterday at 6 a.m. in St. John?s hospital after an illness of four weeks.
The body was taken to the Albright funeral home where services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday by the Rev. George S. Taggart, pastor of the First Presbyterian church. Burial will occur in East Maplewood cemetery.
Mr. Bassett was a native of Anderson and at the age of 19 he went to Germany to study music and literature for five years. Following his return to this country, he played concerts and taught piano until an accident, which broke his hand, ended his concert career. He later taught at Beloit college, Wis.
He enlisted in the Army in 1917 and was sent to Fort Sheridan, Wyo., where he attended the first officers? training school. Following completion of the school he was commissioned a second lieutenant and was sent to Washington, where he attended the War College for special training in G2 Army Intelligence. He sailed for France in September of 1917 and was assigned to Gen. Pershing?s headquarters for additional intelligence training.
The deceased was attached to British troops as Liaison officer and was engaged in questioning German prisoners, during which time he was advanced to the rank of captain. Following the Armistice he was sent to Warsaw, Poland, where he was the highest ranking American officer. During his stay there he served as American representative on the Inter-Allied Subcommission to Maintain peace. In 1922 he returned to Paris where he was married to Olive Moss of Denver, who served as a canteen worker for the YMCA during the war.
Following his discharge from the Army the couple resided in Denver until 1927, when they came to this city. He had been engaged as an insurance representative since. He served as heating plant superintendent under the administration of Mayor C.D. Rotruck and was active in Republican politics here for a many years.
He was a member of the Fellowship Masonic Lodge, Chamber of Commerce, George Hockett American Legion post and the 40 and 8.
Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Olive Bassett; a daughter, Barbara, at home; and a son, Dennison Bassett, who is an aeronautical engineer in California.

Of special interest during the program was the reading of a letter from Mrs. Earl Bassett, formerly of Anderson, and now of California, whose great grandfather was captain of the American ship first to land at Pitcairn Island following the settlement of the mutiny.

Mr. and Mrs. Earl Bassett, 1021 Madison avenue, announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Barbara, to Robert E. Pearce of Indianapolis, The couple plan an April wedding.
Miss Bassett is a graduate of Anderson high school and the University of Colorado. Mr. Pearce graduated from Terre Haute high school, Rose Polytechnic Institute at Terre Haute, and he is now empl90yed at Allison Division of General Motors in Indianapolis. He is a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity.
