Louis S. Bessette Long Resident, Dead
Conducted Grocery Business Here for 32 Years
      Was a Gold Prospector
Louis Surprenant Bessette, one of the oldest of French-Canadian citizens in this city and a prominent grocery and marketman here for the past 32 years died at his home, 362 Fountain Street, early yesterday morning. Illness was incident to old age. Mr. Bessette was 79 years of age.
He was born in St. Hubert, Canada on June 29, 1838. During the period when discoveries of gold were numerous in the West in 1849, Mr. Bessette, then a mere youth, started from this house in Canada to California. He started on his journey by boat, arriving first in Colorado. During that year he finally reached San Francisco, where he remained for a few years. Returning to Canada, he travelled extensively over the Rockies and the Northwest.
In Canada again, he resumed his friendship with former friends and in 1867 he was married. He came to this city about 33 years ago and within a year had started a lucrative grocery business. He conducted his store in various parts of the city, but for many years past he has been located in the Pleasant View section. A chain of stores located throughout the Blackstone Valley, at present are conducted by his son, Napoleon E. Bessette, while other sons own stores in the Pleasant View district.
Last April, Mr. and Mrs. Bessette, who survives him, observed their golden wedding anniversary. At that time he was in excellent health, although he retired from active business a few years ago, and enjoyed the celebration fully as much as anyone present. He took sick soon afterward, however, and death was expected by his family.
He was a member of the Pawtucket branch of the Catholic Knights of America, and a devout communicant of the Church of Our Lady of Consolation. He is survived by a wife, Mrs. Mary Bessette, and eight sons and daughters. They are Mrs. Mary Graveline, Louis Bessette Jr., Emil Bessette, Miss Rosa Bessette, Miss Emma Bessette, Alfred G. Bessette, George H. Bessette and Napoleon E. Bessette. He is also survived by several grandchildren.
The funeral will be held from his late home tomorrow morning. A solemn high mass will be celebrated at the Church of Our Lady of Consolation and burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery.
