      Martin Bass

      The death of MARTIN BASS, an old and respected resident of this city, at an early hour on Tuesday morning was the source of deepest sorrow to his children, relatives and friends although his passed was not unexpected. Mr. Bass had been in poor heath the past year and for six weeks preceding his death is condition has been so serious that he was confined to his bed. He suffered untold pain and agony from his ailment and death, when it came, was a relief to him. The funeral was held today, Friday from St. Mary?s church, Rev. F. L. N. Thelen officiating with interment in the St. Mary?s cemetery.

      Martin Bass was born on the 26th day of February, 1852, in Surrein Canton Graubundten, Switzerland. He spent his younger days in his native country and acquired the rudiments of an education, attending school during the winter months and working on the Alps herding cattle during the summer. At the age of seventeen years he started to learn the mason trade and in 1872 he left Switzerland and came to America, settling in Oshkosh. There he followed his trade during the summer months and in the winter worked in the pine forests. In 1877 he came to Chilton and formed a partnership with Albert Noth which existed for many years and together they put up many of the substantial building in this city. In 1881 he began doing fire brick work, in which line of masonry he became an expert and he followed the same until the spring of 1924 when he was forced to give up work on account of failing health. During the past few years he has built and relined many lime kilns and boilers in this section of Wisconsin and his work has always been first Class.

      In 1881 he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Genal of Oshkosh, their union being blessed with ten children, seven of whom are living. His wife and eldest daughter preceded him in death in 1906 leaving him with seven motherless children, his daughters assisting in the care of the household.

      He is survived by three sons, Hugo and George of Park Falls and Joseph of Hurley and four daughters, Miss Lucy of this city, Mrs. John Heabler of Cleveland, Ohio, Miss Josephine of Great Lakes and Miss Margaret of this city.

      Martin Bass was a good, honorable, hardworking man, giving full measure of labor for every dollar he received and never slighting his work. He was well known throughout this section of Wisconsin and his genial manner made him many friends who will regret his death. He was a good father and his memory as such will be cherished by his sons and daughter.
