Rev. Martin V. Bass Sr.
Reverend Martin V. Bass Sr, was born in Jefferson City, Missouri. In 1935, Rev. Bass, his two brothers and their parents moved to Egg Harbor City, New Jersey. He attended the Public Schools and graduated from Egg Harbor High School.
He was a veteran of the US Army having served in WWII and Korean War and the US Air National Guard for more than thirty years both Active and Reserve Duty.
On August 15, 1948, Rev. Bass, married Virsey A. Austin of South Egg Harbor. This union was blessed with five children. Rev. Bass worked nights at the U.S. Naval Yard in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and completed his education at the Spring Garden Institute during the day.
He was transferred from the U.S. Naval Yard to the U.S. Engineering Center in Lakehurst, N.J. where he was Production Comptroller and President of the Equal Opportunity Board. He worked a total of thirty years for the U.S. Navy, after which, he went to work for Whitehall Laboratories in Hammonton, New Jersey for approximately nine years and then retired.
Rev. Bass's community services include fifteen years as a member of the Galloway Township Board of Education, former president of Galloway Township Library, a member of the Housing Rehabilitation and Playground Committees.
He served as Chaplain for the V.F.W. Post #1269 and Chaplin for the U.S. Postal Service. He served on several Committees: Equal Employment Opportunity Add Hawk Committee of Galloway Township for 20 years, Pastors United for Community Service, Ministers Alliance of Egg Harbor City and the C.M.E. Philadelphia District Minister Alliance.
He was a strong advocate for children and education. He was the spear head for the Galloway Township Public Schools Breakfast Program and the South Egg Harbor Head Start Program. He joined St. Paul Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in August, 1955. He served as Chairman of the Steward Board until GOD called him to the ministry in 1958. He served as Assistant Pastor until Bishop Henry C. Bunton assigned him Pastor of St. Paul Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in 1964. He attended Drexel University Theological Seminary and holds Deacon and Ordained Elders Orders from the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his beloved wife and soul mate to who he was married for 65 1/2 years, Virsey A. (Austin) Bass; five children, Valorie L. Anderson (Walter), Martin V. Bass, Jr. (Christine), M. Tyrone Bass (Denise), Charles E. Bass, Sr. (Renee) and Spring A. Bass-Smoaks (Anthony); eleven grandchildren, Toria (Mark), Martin III (Kristin), Carla, Renata, Charles Jr., Monique, Kristian (Mark), Trina (Zackary), Brittney, Myron Jr., and Anthony II (A.J.); ten great-grandchildren; two sister-in-laws, Ruth Bass, Bernice Bass; numerous cousins, nephews, nieces and host of friends throughout the United States.
He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Charles Bass of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Clifton Bass, of Utica, New York.
Visitation will be at St. Paul CME Church on Fairmount and Liverpool Ave. Egg Harbor City, New Jersey. Another visitation will at Beacon Evangelical Church 420 S. 6th Avenue, Galloway, New Jersey with a service to begin at 11 AM. Burial will follow at Egg Harbor City Cemetery.

BASS, REVEREND MARTIN V. SR., age 89, passed from labor to reward on Sunday, March 16, 2014.
