Shirley Lorettia Wynne
Shirley Lorettia Wynne, age 68, a resident of Merced passed away at Doctors Medical Center on Monday, June 21, 2004, suddenly after a heart attack.
She was born to the late Elisha and Rosa Bass on February 3, 1936 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The family moved to Chowchilla, CA in January 1937. Her father was the first black man to buy land and farm near the 152 highway.
Shirley attended local schools and graduated from Chowchilla Union High School. She was a cheerleader and she played volleyball and basketball. She met her prince charming John Allen Wynne Jr. II, and fell in love and eloped and got married in June of 1953 in Las Vegas, NV. John's father accompanied them. They lived in Merced and birthed their first child Sheila Wynne at Mercy Hospital in Merced; 11 months later, Charlotte her second child was born in Madera Hospital, her third child was John Allen Wynne Jr. III, her forth child was Perry Wayne SlatonWynne, the fifth child was Leslie Dean Wynne, and the sixth and baby girl is Daphne Diane Chirstian-Crowell. The four children were all born in Compton, CA.
Shirley worked at Sears for several years. She sold maintenance insurance policies for Sears. She was later injured on the job at Sears and received disability for her entire life.
She and John Allen Wynne Jr. II were divorced in 1967. He remarried later to Camile Wynne who had three children; our stepsisters and brother; Carmen, Jerod and Monique whom we love. Mother, Shirley never remarried but had a long-time companion named James Thomas, Daphne & Dino's step-dad. After her salvation she remained married to Jesus. Later in 1983 she moved back to Merced, CA and attended faithfully The 1st Church of Christ Holiness USA where she was an active member and served as treasurer until she died.
In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters, and her best friend Oletta Murphy.
She leaves to cherish her memory six children: Sheila Rebecca O'Guynn of Hesperia, CA; Charlotte Alleen Wynne of Merced, CA; John Allen Wynne III of Mercian, MS; Perry Wayne Slaton Wynne of Las Vegas, NV; Leslie Dean Wynne (Dino) of Merced, CA; and Daphne Diane Christian Crowell of Lancaster, CA; three brothers: John Bass (Polly) of Chowchilla, CA; Doris Bass of Pasadena, CA; and Elbert Bass of Oakland, CA; two sisters: Delores Ollison of San Francisco, CA and Dazettia Ligons-Walker of Los Angeles, CA. She was blessed with 39 grandchildren & 21 great grandchildren. She is further survived by a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and many friends.

A visitation will be held from 2:00 P.M.6:00 P.M., Today, Wednesday, June 30, 2004 at Ivers & Alcorn Funeral Home 901 W. Main Street in Merced. A Wake will be held at 6:00 P.M., Wednesday, June 30, 2004 at Ivers & Alcorn Funeral Home in Merced. A Home Going Celebration will be held at 1:00 P.M., Thursday, July 1, 2004 at Ivers & Alcorn Funeral Home in Merced. Elder Easter Jordan will officiate. (The 1st Church of Christ Holiness USA) The burial will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park 1480 "B" Street in Merced.
Arrangements are under the direction of Ivers & Alcorn Funeral Home in Merced.
