Jumps Off Of Ice Wagon And In Car's Path
Katherine Bassett Is Believed To Be Fatally Injured
She Is Operated On At Rockford Hospital

Katherine Bassett, 9 years old, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alonzo Bassett, 308 North Day avenue, was probably fatally injured at 3:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon when she jumped from the back end of an ice wagon in front of her home and ran directly into the path of an automobile driven by James Womack, rural route 8.
An emergency operation was performed last night in an attempt to save the girl's life, but at press time this morning little hope was held out for her recovery at Rockford hospital.
      Run Over By Wheel
The wheels of the automobile passed over the child's abdomen and inflicted severe internal injuries. The operation revealed that the girl's spleen was ruptured and that other internal organs were injured. She also suffered severe shock and bruises about the body.
Katherine, her sister, Helen, 11 years old and brother, Clyde, 6years old, were playing in front of their homes when the ice wagon stopped in the middle of the street. When the iceman walked into the house to make his delivery, the three children ran out to the wagon and jumping upon the back step seized several pieces of ice that had been chipped off.
      Runs Into Auto Path
Helen and Clyde ran back to the curbing in safety but when Katherien dashed from behind the wagon, she ran directly in front of Womack's automobile which was traveling north in Day avenue.
While her brother and sister looked on in horror, Katherine was rolled along the pavement for a short distance and then the front wheel of the car passed over her abdomen. Womack brought his automobile to a stop as quickly as possible and ran back to the aid of the injured child. She lay motionless on the pavement, gasping for breath.
      Taken To Hospital
He picked her up and took her into her home and after a hasty examination revealed that she was seriously injured, Womack placed the girl in his car with her mother and rushed to Rockford hospital.
An examination revealed that she was seriously bruised about the abdomen. Physicians feared internal injuries and had the injured girl put to bed and kept under close observation. Early last night, her pulse started to rise and her condition became worse.
      Spleen Ruptured
Physicians decided to operate knowing that the child's internal organs had been injured by the wheels of the automobile. When the abdomen was opened it was found to be filled with blood and further examination revealed that the spleen was cut for two inches.
After the operation, physicians said that the girl's condition was "very critical" with but slight chance for recovery. They said that if she recovered from shock and lived 24 hours, she might have a chance for life.
