Fighting With Corporal Wins Coveted D.S.C.
Carrying a message through a deadly Hun fire when all dispatch bearers had been killed, wounded, but refusing to go the rear, Corp. Waldo S. Bassett, of the Fighting Ninth, has been awarded the D.S.C. for his heroism on July 18, south of Soissons.
Lieut. Harold J. Eddy, who sends the word of the honor to Corp. Bassett, was with the Thirty-ninth Infantry at Camp Syracuse and attained the rank of sergeant-major after arriving in France. A short time later he was detached and sent to an officers? training school, from which he recently was graduated and assigned to troops from New York State as second lieutenant.
The official report of the heroism of Corp. Bassett shows that he volunteered to carry messages through intense shell and machine gun fire after all the runners had been killed or wounded.
Bassett was wounded while carrying the message but continued on until it was delivered and refused to go to the rear for treatment until ordered to do so by his company commander.
Bassett and Corp. Alfred Panella, son of Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Panella of Sausalito, are in the same company and very close friends.
