Born in Jacksonville, Florida, Jean was the daughter of George Talcott and Martha Pollard Augur, and sister to her beloved Carole. Jean had a happy childhood and loved reading, camping and Girl Scouts. She shared her love of Scouting with her children and grandchildren, raising three Eagle Scout sons and a Girl Scout daughter, and was very proud of her two Eagle Scout grandsons.

Jean received a Bachelor of Science in Bacteriology, from Florida State University in 1950. Jean worked as a medical technologist at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, where she met Don. Jean and Don fell in love listening to jazz and were married in Decatur, Georgia, in 1952. They lived in various locations before moving to Greenville in 1956.

In Greenville, Jean raised her family, volunteered in the community and was devoted to her church. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Greenville where she served unselfishly for many years as the Church Librarian, a Circle Leader and a Bible Study leader. Jean diligently polished the church silver for the communion table for over 20 years. In 1999, Jean was recognized as Woman of the Year by the Westminster Presbyterian Women.

Jean had many interests and loves, such as cooking and traveling, but her first love after family was reading and learning. Jean was dedicated to both, encouraging her children and grandchildren to read constantly. She also loved song birds, her orchids and her sheltie dogs.

Jean is survived by her sons, Michael Augur Kilgore of Greenville, Stephen Bassett Kilgore of Clinton SC, Phillip Arthur Kilgore (Aline) of Greenville, Geoffrey Scott Kilgore (Susan); and her daughter, Sharon Louise Kilgore of Greenville. Jean also is survived by her four beloved grandchildren, Harriet Ruth (Kilgore) Scully (John), Geoffrey Scott Kilgore, Jr. (Elise), Ellen Hope Kilgore (Scott Harrison, fiancée) and Phillip Arthur Kilgore, Jr.; her sister Carol Augur Bedenbaugh of Virginia Beach, VA; and numerous beloved nieces, nephews and other family members.
