      Richard L. Bassett, Forsyth, Mo.

      Richard Lee Bassett, 82, of Forsyth, Mo., died Aug. 15, 2014, of a heart attack while giving a eulogy for his mother-in-law?s memorial service in Greenfield.

      As were his wishes, Dick was cremated. A celebration of Dick?s life will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, at Cornerstone Church, 2158 Highway 92, Greenfield. Burial will be private. A memorial service was held 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23, at Calvary Church in Forsyth, Mo.

      Richard Lee Bassett, son of Helen A. (Flynn) and Perl F. Bassett, was born March 28, 1932, in Casey.

      Dick graduated from Greenfield High School in 1949.

      After graduating, Dick joined the U.S. Navy and served from 1950-54 during the Korean War.

      On June 5, 1955, Dick married Patsy Joan Lane at Hebron Methodist Church.

      They farmed for four years in the Hebron area.

      In 1959, Dick entered Iowa State College and graduated with a primary Bachelor of Science degree in forestry and a minor in range in 1963.

      Dick worked for the USDA Soil Conservation Service for four years in Iowa and USDA Forest Service in the Southwestern U.S. for 30 years. He retired in 1994.

      They lived in Greenfield near his in-laws until August 2012 when they moved to Forsyth, Mo.

      Dick was a member of the Assemblies of God Church and helped in that church?s ministry, MAPS RV Volunteers. They traveled from Alaska to Hawaii from 1994 until 2012 helping build churches. He was a member of American Legion Post 265, Experimental Aircraft Association and National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association for which he wrote a monthly newsletter.

      On Feb. 15, 1966, Dick got his private pilots license.

      Dick is survived by his wife Joan Bassett of Forsyth, Mo.; sister Betty (husband George) Kirkland of Branson West, Mo.; brother-in-law Gabby Lane of Fairplay, Colo.; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

      Dick was preceded in death by his parents and grandnephew Patrick Kirkland.
