Bertie was born in Ragland, Alabama on June 19,1936 to Lawrence & Katherine Chambliss McGuffie. After graduating from high school, Bertie worked for Barber's Dairy in Birmingham, AL where she met her husband, Curry. They were married for 42 wonderful years. The couple relocated to Jacksonville, Florida where they had two children. Curry and family then moved to Winter Haven, Florida where Bertie was involved with both Grace Lutheran Church & School events and later became a Stephen Minister in the church to help people in desperate times of need.

Bertie's passions in life were her love for friends and family. She had a caring spirit and loved people from all walks of life. She enjoyed reading and studying the Bible, which was the foundation of her life of faith and service to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She loved going on family trips, whether to the beach or mountains. She also greatly enjoyed roses, and her husband grew an amazing 50+ rose bush garden for her. She had an appreciation and amazing wonder about space and all the secrets and mind-boggling mysteries the cosmos contains. One of her favorite celebrities in life was the late Rev. Billy Graham; Bertie loved his saying, "We are only passing through this world." She also loved the life and service of the late Queen Elizabeth II. Bertie was 15-years old when the Queen was coronated.

Bertie battled Dementia for the past 12 years and is now survived by her children: Stephen Bassett, of Summerville, SC and Tammy Bassett Leopard, of Lithia, FL. Other survivors include her three grandchildren: Drew, Kacey, and Emily Leopard. She was preceded in death by her parents, of Ragland, AL; and her husband, Curry J. Bassett, of Punta Gorda, FL.

Bertie's life was well lived with peace and love.
