      Mrs. Bassett Celebrates at Brassall

Mrs. Phoebe Verrall Bassett, who was born at Redbank Plains on March 4 1856, celebrated her 89th birthday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. O. Tronc, Brassall road, Brassall. She is the only surviving daughter of the late Mr. Geo. Verrall, who arrived in Sydney in 1844, and shortly afterwards lived on the Clarence River (N.S.W.). In 1849 he took up land at Redbank Plains. He was the first settler in Queensland to introduce the culture of wheat into the West Moreton district, and he grew it successfully for many years at Redbank Plains. His daughter, Mrs. Phoebe Verrall Bassett, was married in 1877 to the late Mr. Richard Bassett, who lived at Pine and Flint Streets, North Ipswich, and who was employed in the railway workshops at North Ipswich, for many years. Mrs. R. Cooper, Smith street, North Ipswich, Mrs. O. Tronc, and Mr. P. Bassett, of Brassal road, are members of her family and she also has three grandsons, two granddaughters, three great grandsons, and one great granddaughter. The respected lady?s birthday was celebrated by the holding of a party at the home of Mrs. O. Tronc, Brassall. It was a pleasant gathering of relatives. A beautifully decorated iced cake made by Mrs. O. Tronc adorned the table. The respected lady, who has not enjoyed the best of health for some time, received many messages of congratulations and greetings as well as a nice assortment of gifts.

      Ipswich Native Dies At 93

The death on Wednesday of Mrs. Phoebe Bassett, at the age of 93 years and six months, removed one of the oldest natives of Ipswich.
The late Mrs. Bassett, who was the last remaining of 14 children of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Verrall, was born at Redbank Plains in 1956. Her father arrived in Australia from England in 1844, and settled in Queensland in 1849. A year later he took up property at Redbank Plains, and is credited with being the first settler in that district. He established a model farm and was among the first to introduce the culture of wheat into West Moreton.
The late Mrs. Bassett married Richard Bassett in St. Paul?s Church of England, Ipswich, on July 11, 1877. The ceremony was performed by Rev. J.H.L. Zillman. The couple first settled on a farming property at Mr. Walker, but later Mr. Bassett engaged in mining at Tivoli. After a time he was employed the railway workshops as a blacksmith. When he retired, the couple made their home in Southport. Mr. Bassett predeceased his wife 21 years ago, after which she returned to Ipswich to live, remaining until her death.
The late Mrs. Bassett is survived by two daughters, Mesdames R. Cooper and O. Tronc, and one son, Mr. P. Bassett, all of Ipswich. There are five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. The funeral took place to the Ipswich Cemetery on Thursday, when the services were conducted by Rev. J. Hardman. The late Mrs. Bassett?s mother died at the age of 92 years and 11 months.
