He was born on February 17, 1983, in Burlington, VT, the son of William and Cheryl (Kapitan) Bassett. Matt was employed at one time as a sales rep. for the Granite Group. He liked to go hiking, fishing and swimming, but above all he loved spending time with his son, Matthew John. He is survived by his mother, Cheryl Trudo of Rutland; his long time companion, Amy Grassi, and their son, Matthew John of Rutland; an uncle, Keith Kapitan of Shoreham; his grandmother, Sheila Kapitan of Castleton; and his father, William Bassett and his wife, Laurie, of Maine. He was predeceased by his grandfather, Peter Kapitan. There will be no calling hours. Family and friends are invited to a gathering on Saturday, June 18, 2016, 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at 108 Franklin Street in Rutland to celebrate Matt's life. Arrangements are being handled by the Barnard Funeral Home in Pittsford.
