Garvin Madison Bass Obituary
An obituary appeared in the Chronicle and the St. Pete Times last week for Bass, Madison G. Jr. It stated he was "of Crystal River."
First of all, he never used the name Madison, he was Garvin Madison Bass. He only used the name Garvin to anyone who ever met or knew him. He lived in a house at 9415 E. Gobbler Dr. in Floral City. He built the house himself and helped build other homes in the neighborhood.
Garvin was well-known for his large vegetable garden on Gobbler Drive. The garden was always open for those who needed fresh vegetables or fruit from his many trees: orange, grapefruit, date, pepper, tangerines, free of charge. He was always available to advise on garden and tree planting.
Mr. Bass had two sons. One served in the military in Iraq and the Middle East. He had 8 to 10 grandchildren, and had numerous great-grandchildren. Mr. Bass suffered a stroke 10 to 12 years ago and was hospitalized for about a year. When he got well and got out, he took his wife, who was paralyzed, from a nursing home and brought her home and lovingly cared for her for four years until her death, without any outside help. Garvin had a large well-equipped workshop that was always open to most anyone needing help fixing lawnmowers, chain saws, outboard motors or any other kind of equipment. He would tell you how to fix it or help you fix it or fix it himself for free.
Garvin enjoyed going out for breakfast or dinner, whether the food was good or bad. If the service was good he was known for over-tipping. Mr. Bass was one of the last of a dying breed.
All these facts can be verified by contacting family, friends and neighbors and most any one who came into contact with him.
