Longtime Activist Joan Bassett
Joan L. Bassett, a former Tiburon planning commissioner and community organizer, died at her Tiburon home on June 14 after a lengthy bout with cancer. She was 67.
Ms. Bassett served on the Tiburon Planning Commission in the late 1980s and early 1990s, a tumultuous time when the town of Tiburon ended a building moratorium and began to ponder its future growth. She also served on the board of directors of the Tiburon Salvage Shop, which raised money for local charities, and on the Belvedere-Tiburon Arts Council. For many years she also volunteered as an usher for the San Francisco Opera, San Francisco Ballet and American Bach Soloists.
?Joan was living in Tiburon before the town was incorporated (in 1964),? said former Town Manager Bob Kleinert. ?She was always volunterring her services in some way to improve the community.? ?She served (on the Planning Commission) at a really critical time because the town was re-examining its general plan,? he said. ?These were difficult hearings because everyone had an opinion on density and growth.?
Ms. Bassett was born in Scottsdale, Pa., grew up in Royal Oak, Mich., and attended Wayne State University. She and her former husband, Charles Bassett, moved to Mill Valley in 1959, and then to Tiburon in 1962.
She worked as a bookkeeper at two Marin County newspapers. In recent years, she served as a telecommunications consultant.
A free spirit by nature, Ms. Bassett traveled throughout the world ? trekking in Nepal, living on the Isle of Rhodes in Greece, riding on the back of a motorcycle across the Isle of Man, and tracking her grandfather?s family roots in the ancient Italian town of Ferentino.
?Her life was love and enjoyment of all her friends, and she had many,? said Ms. Bassett?s daughter, Troy Allison Bassett.
Ms. Bassett?s survivors include her longtime companion, Dan Hunt of Tiburon, who described her as ?intrepid, having a wonderful view of life.?
She also leaves behind three daughters, Troy Bassett of Tiburon, Juliette Ambatzidis of Tiburon and Sarah B. Lee of San Rafael; three grandchildren, Aristotelis, Achilleas and Rachel; a brother, Thomas Lupo of Imlay City, Mich., and a cousin, Jack Miller of Fowlerville, Mich.
A celebration of Ms. Bassett?s life will be held at St. Hilary?s Church on Rock Hill Drive in Tiburon at 4 p.m. Friday. Friends are invited to the service.
