Jean O'Gwynn Bassett
Jean O'Gwynn Bassett - was born on April 4, 1922 in Montgomery, Alabama. Jean passed away in a local hospital, Wednesday, May 24, 2006. Mrs. Bassett, a graduate of the University of Alabama, was well known as secretary to the late Congressman Frank Boykin. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Howard (Bill) Bassett, whom she met while working for Congressman Boykin. The Bassetts moved to Mobile in 1952 and Mrs. Bassett went to work with the late Mobile businessman, Riley Smith. She was a prominent member of the Republican Party and served on the executive committee. Mrs. Bassett was a long time member of Central Presbyterian Church. She is loved and admired by the many friends and associates she has made throughout the years. Mrs. Basstt is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara J. Bassett (Alan Galdis) of Mobile; a son and daughter-in-law, Doc (Betty) Bassett of Mobile; two granddaughters, Lauren (Jim) Taylor, London, England and Julia (Chris) Coker, Mount Pleasant, South Carolina; one sister, Jessie (A.J.) Totty, Tacoma, Washington; three nieces, Jacqueline O. Brown, Titusville, Florida; Barbara (Benny) McDaniel, Montgomery, Alabama; Syra Beth Puett, Tacoma, Washington and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, May 31, 2006 at 3:00 p.m. at Central Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 3:00 at the church. Services will be officiated by the Reverend Andrew W. (Drew) Smith with the eulogy delivered by Austin Rainwaters. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to your favorite charity or to Presbyterian Children's Home, P.O. Drawer 577, Talladega, Alabama 35160.
