Iona Bassett
Iona Bassett, 97, of Owensboro passed away Monday, April 15, 2013, at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital. She was born in Calhoun, Okla., to the late Robert Martin and Blanche Allen. She grew up in Ohio County and before marriage, she worked at General Electric. Iona was a loving and dedicated homemaker. She also kept books for her husband's business, Bassett-Watts Heating and Air. She was a longtime member of Owensboro Church of Christ, where she had served as a Sunday school teacher. Iona had a great sense of humor, loved animals (especially her little black cat), never drove a car, was an excellent drawer and seamstress, made a great chess pie and enjoyed yard work.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Joseph W. Bassett, in 1990; two infant sons; a grandson, Robert Jason Mattingly, in 2006; and a sister, Sybil Malone, in 1990.
Iona is survived by two daughters, Joy L. Tepner (Ron) of Nashville and Jo Ellen Mattingly of Owensboro, who served as primary caregiver for the last seven years. She also is survived by grandchildren Joseph Eric Tepner (Laura) of Fort Worth, Texas, Marc Allen Tepner (Elise) of Franklin, Tenn., and Kerri Anne McEntire (David) of Owensboro; and great-grandchildren Jacob and Katie McEntire, Mattias Tepner, Zoe Grace Tepner and Cole Tepner.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory, Owensboro. Burial will be in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Friends may visit after 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
