Bass Kin
William A. Bass was borned in 1809 the six child of Uriah Bass and Sarah Ellen Green. At this time the family lived in Wayne Co. N.C.
When he was a young boy his father moved the family to Huntsville, Al. Uriah bought some land here and began to farm. He applied for and received many land grants thereby accumulating a large amount of land. He expanded his farming operation and bought many slaves to help him schieve this.
Uriah Bass died in Madison county Al. in 1819. His will on record Huntsville left al lhis land and slaves to his ten children. Wm. A. received about 300 acres from this father?s will. The court records show that he sold most of the land in 1835. He might have been living in Tennessee and came back to Huntsville to complete the sale. Then he returned to Tn., because he came to Texas in 1838 from there.
Wm. A. came into Texas at San Augustine, and appears in the first Census of Texas there in 1839. Also he married there, a lady named Louisa Hibbit.
The next account I have of him is in the 1840 Census where he is Burleson County Texas. Here he applies to the Texas Land Board for a land grant. The grant was approved but wa not completed in Burleson County.
In 1841 Wm. A. is in Walker Co. Tex, and he reapplies to the Land Board for his grant. The grant is approved so he received 1280 acres in North Liberty County. Later this land became a part of Polk County. Then when San Jacinto County was formed the land became a part of this county where it is today. Wm. A. sold this land in 1851.
In the Census of 1850 Wm. A. was living in Polk Co. on his farm. He now has two children by Louisa Hibbit. Robert Wm was borned in 1842 and Sarah Ellen (named for her grandmother) was borned in 1845. Robert W. was killed in the Civil War.
In 1852 Delilah Ann Carter and her family along with the Bass boys James F. and Nathaniel, the Chandlers, the McKennsies and others came from Mississippi and joined Wm. A. in this area.
In 1852 Wm. A. married for the third time to Elizabeh A. Lawrence. Elizabeth had a daughter Elizabeth A. by a previous marriage.
In the 1860 census Wm.A. was listed in Polk Co. His children and his Mother were living in his home at the time of the census.
Again in the 1870 census Wm. A. was still in Polk Co. In 1872 Nancy Jane married William Spaulding in the home of Wm. A. This seems to prove that he was indeed her grandfather.
It is my contention that Wm. A. married Delilah Ann back in Alabama, or Mississippi. Although at this time I do not have any proof of it.
There are 3 things that happened to support my contention.
One when the Carters and Bass?s, etc came to Texas they settled in the same area where Wm. A. lived.
