Keith Brown Dies, Noted As Musician
Keith Crosby Brown of 544 Ward street, Newton Center, director of the music department of Mt. Ida Junior College and a composer and lecturer, died at his home yesterday. From 1934 until his appointment to the Mt. Ida post he was assistant manager of the New England Conservatory of Music from which he was graduated in 1914.
He was a native of Nova Scotia, but had lived in Greater Boston since boyhood when he was a soloist at St. Paul?s Cathedral. During the World War he was general of entertainment under YMCA auspices in Italy, his work extending to both the American and Italian forces on the Italian front.
In 1935 he was appointed director of the People?s Choral Union and was also director of all choral and symphonic groups under the auspices of the Massachusetts University Extension department. He was a former music director in West Hartford, Ct., schools and assistant professor of music in Hartford Theological Seminary.
As a composer he wrote ?Bostonia Suite,? played by the Boston Pops Orchestra at Symphony Hall, in addition to several operates, secular and sacred songs, and he was a member of the American Society of Composers and Producers.
He leaves his wife, Dorothea Bassett Brown, and four sons, Samuel, David and Benjamin, all of Newton, and Peter of Miami. Funeral services will be at the Waterman Chapel, Kenmore square, Saturday at 2 P.M.
