Those county citizens were called upon to part with one of its stalwart citizens when the grim reaper called James Monroe Bass on Wednesday morning, November 4th at about 1 a.m. Mr. Bass was 87 years, 9 months and 7 days of age and at one tie was county judge of Thomas county. For the past year or longer he had made his home with Mr. and Mrs. George Grammer, west of town, and before this time was at the homes of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Ayle and Mr. and Mrs. George Russell in this city. Mrs. Bass passed away some five years ago while they were residing at the court house here. Only the highest respect was held for both these fine old people during their long residence in the county, which began in the year of 1889 on a homestead six miles northwest of Thedford. Both he and Mrs. Bass were faithful to their Bible and were regular attendants when health permitted.

His wife preceded him in death five years ago. She too, was an ardent Christian woman and a member of the Bethel Church of Thedford, Nebr., at the time of her death. Mr. Bass was at one time Judge of Thomas county. He was a man of high ideals and a man with a good education, though having gone to school only a few months in his life.
