      Sudden Death

Mr. James Madison Bass, a son of Mr. J.L. Bass, of this place, died suddenly at Wilmington Monday evening. The deceased was working on the Wilmington Messenger and had reported for duty a short while before his death. When ?time? was called he complained of feeling sick and put on a substitute. He then left the office and went to his boarding house where he died about 9 o?clock. Heart failure is given as the cause of death.
Mr. Bass was born and reared in this town and was in the 42nd year of his age. He learned his printers trade in this office under Stone & Uzzell. He left here with them and worked in Raleigh on the Raleigh News. He also set type in Richmond, Petersburg, Goldsboro and Danville. He worked on the Messenger at Goldsboro under the late Julius A. Bonitz, and went with him to Wilmington when he established the daily Messenger, and has worked on the paper constantly since that time. He was faithful and conscientious in the discharge of every duty and was highly esteemed by all who knew him. He was never married but contributed the proceeds of his labor to the support of a widowed sister and her children. He was a member of the Typographical Union and his funeral arrangements were taken in hand by the Union. His remains reached here on the afternoon train Tuesday and were met at the depot by a large number of sorrowing relatives and friends. Mr. Vance Norwood of the Messenger, and Mrs. John R. Mahoney of the Star accompanied the remains to this place. The interment was at the family burying ground, near here, and Rev. P.N. Stainback conducted the services. We extend our sincere sympathies to the bereaved family in their sad affliction.
