Voigtlander Dies, Retired Army Colonel (Includes Picture)
Karl von Voigtlander, Borrego Springs civic leader and a retired Army colonel whose career spanned 31 years, died Sunday night in Naval Hospital. He was 58.
Military graveside services for Von Boigtlander will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Greenwood Memorial Park. Cremation is planned.
During his long military career, Von Voigtlander saw action in World War II and the Korean conflict. He also served in the Pentagon as chief of special projects under the Chief of Information.
As a civic leader, Von Voigtlander served the desert community of Borrego Springs in many capacities, including president of the Lions Club and Chamber of Commerce.
Von Voigtlander was a native of New Jersey and was graduated from Michigan State University.
He began his military career in 1931, as a second lieutenant. From 1935 to 1937, Von Voigtlander served with the Civilian Conservation Corps under the auspices of the Army.
During World War II, he fought with the 4th Armored Division and was executive officer of the 771st Tank Battalion, both in the European theater of war.
During the Korean War, Von Voigtlander was with the 5th Cavalry regiment, until he was wounded severely and returned to Japan for hospitalization.
Von Voigtlander is survived by his widow, Lois; two daughters, including Mrs. Marta Belisle of San Diego; a brother, and five grandchildren.
