Frances Bassett Lewis
Was born at Coventry, Chenango county, New York, March 20, 1844, and died at his home at Turkey Creek, Steuben county, Indiana, April 25, 1905, aged 61 years, 1 month and 5 days.
Mr. Lewis was fifth of the seven children born to Harvey and Elizabeth Bassett Lewis, who were natives of Connecticut. On April 18, 1864, he enlisted as a recruit in Co. A., 44th Indiana Regiment and was faithful in the service of his country until mustered out Sept. 14, 1865.
May 26, 1867, he was united in marriage with Samantha Newnam, daughter of William and Sarah Newnam, who were pioneers from Maryland. No children blessed this union, but the sacred principles of parental love were nourished by the kindly care and protection extended to the children of a loved sisters, who now in the hours of affliction, show their appreciation in kindly needs.
In the year 1870 he had his young wife were converte4d and united with the M.E. church at Springfield, and his daily life was a constant reminder of the power and saving grace of the Redeemer. He leaves to mourn his departure the companion who has shared his joys and sorrows for nearly 38 years, and two brothers, Newel P., of Angola, and Dwight B., of Salem, the father, mother, three brothers and an only sister preceded him to the Heavenly mansions.
The brotherhood of Knights of Pythias, of which he was an honored member, have faithfully fulfilled their sacred obligations, for which they have the sincere gratitude of the bereaved friends. Rev. Lautzenhiser conducted the services at the home at 9 a.m., after which the remains were taken to the East Springfield church, followed by a large concourse of people. Many of his army comrades were present to pay a last tribute of respect to his memory. Funeral services at the church were conducted by Rev. Polhemus, of Orland, and interment was made in the cemetery adjacent to the church.
